Matt Bigland was born in Kendal, Cumbria in 1985. His father left home at a young age so he was raised by his mother for the early years of his life.[1] Matt found influence in Dave Grohl at age 14 after he heard Foo Fighters first album and The Colour and the Shape and said he became "obsessed".[2] Matt also has an ongoing obsession with Tonka Trucks and Hot Wheels.
In 2004. Matt Bigland left Cumbria and moved to Leeds to go to university and later formed Mother Vulpine in 2006. An experimental rock group consisting of Matt Bigland, Lindsey Wilson, Tom Hudson (later of Pulled Apart By Horses) and Ben Waddleton. Matt was subsequently kicked out of university however. He said the reason being because he "was never there" as he was concentrating on Mother Vulpine. Mother Vulpine released 1 single under 'On The Bone Records' which was called 'Keep Your Wits Sharp (Her Words Are Quick)' in May 2007. The band soon split towards the end of 2007. Matt Bigland has stated that he was "holding back" in his songwriting at the time. Whilst he was in Mother Vulpine however. He started to create demo's of songs which he would later use for Dinosaur Pile-Up.[3]
In 2007. After the break up of his previous band Mother Vulpine. Matt started up his new group Dinosaur Pile-Up which was his main prority and later called in bassist Tom Dunford and drummer Steve Wilson to finish the line-up. They then later released 2 EP's in 2009; The Traynor 7" and The Most Powerful EP In The Universe. They also were invited to go on tour with alternative rock group The Pixies on their Euro tour. Their debut album Growing Pains was released in October 2010. Tom Dunford and Steve Wilson left the band in late 2009 however, to join different bands. Tom Dunford went on to form a hardcore punk band called 'Fake Death' and Steve Wilson left to join the band Japanese Voyeurs (whom Dinosaur Pile-Up would tour with in 2010). This meant that Matt had to recruit new members. Harry Johns (bass) and Mike Shiels (drums) were brought in later to finish the line-up. Dinosaur Pile-Up have supported bands such as Feeder, Twin Atlantic, Cage The Elephant, Turbowolf in 2010-2011 and had their own headline tour with bands Japanese Voyeurs and The Xcerts supporting them. Matt is still currently playing with Dinosaur Pile-Up and they are set to release their 2nd album in 2012. Dinosaur Pile-Up have also confirmed on their website that bassist Harry Johns had left the band to concentrate on his solo project and that two people known as 'Alessio and Scott' were filling in on guitar and bass.
